Cheers to a new decade

The next time I can say ‘cheers to a new decade’ is 10 years from now.

So, I’ll say it today. Cheers to a new decade, and hello 2020.

Every end and start of a new year I get all sentimental, emotional and reflective. Sometimes I jot down specific goals, wishes and plans. Sometimes I decide on a ‘theme word’ to define the year, as suggested by Claire Diaz-Ortiz. (2020 is FEARLESS for me). Other times I scribble down general themes and ideas I want to make alive.

This time around, I’ve been super reflective. It might be because I’ve had a number of transitions this past year, both in my personal and professional life. I’ve also been going through some journals from this past decade and beyond. (It helps when you’ve recently moved and had all journals collected into one big plastic container.) My journal from 2008 has been most notable—for the personal journeys I’ve experienced and some short stories I’ve written and had forgotten about!

I don’t necessarily have specifics for this new year, but I do have general goals and plans. The specifics of each goal will be laid out as the time comes. I think for this year, it’s important to lay out a general plan, and then be open and flexible with the step-by-steps. I had a lot of specific plans in 2019, and most of them did come to fruition! But it feels kind of nice to start the year on a clean slate, with fewer specifics, but with a grand plan to make some changes and take on new challenges!
